It would not need to shade the entire earth. Just decrease radiance by a fraction of a percent.
One day, when we have a handle on managing the earth's climate (read that: our models are a good deal more sophisticated than they are today), maybe we will build a variable shade and take control. Then we could dump carbon into the sky till the next killing drawback rears its head.
