Forget that...Who was sampling the salinity levels shortly before the last ice age?

Isn't it pure speculation that the salinity levels caused an ice age?

How could you possibly prove such a thing? Why doesn't a hurricane cause an ice age? Surely all that rain effects salinity levels?
