Don't feel like digging up the references right now, but there is data supporting the "freshwater flood" theory of altered ocean currents. I remember reading the article--the giant lake was in what is now Canada, and even had a name. It's all little lakes now.
It is not at all certain that the slower melting taking place now will have the same effect.
