I am trying to understand this dense mentality, and found this on her Wikipedia page:

â€œRaised a Jehovahâ€™s Witness, Shepherd later became a born-again Christian after moving to Los Angeles.â€

And according to the same page, her explanation for not knowing that Earth is round is that â€œin the previous broadcast she had been too nervous, confused and stupid to answer the question adequately.â€

Ah, the Miss Teen South Carolina defense, plus she did admit to being stupid, so she is slightly redeemed. Slightly.
