In my mind one of the few unique experiments a space station could do, would be to provide a platform for artificial gravity experiments with varying g forces. Originally there was a centrifuge planned for ISS, but this was cut, further confirming my view that the ISS is one of the biggest white elephant boondoggles in the history of man.
Do you know where the term "white elephant" comes from. When men in power in India wanted to bankrupt someone, they gave them a white elephant which was sacred. It was extremely expensive to properly care for, and the consequences for not caring for it were severe, ergo bankruptcy ensued for the unlucky recipient of this "gift." Well, the American public was given the "gift" of the ISS, and there is no end in paying for it.
