re: Link

For starters, there are nowhere close to "50 million people" who believe as Hagee believes. Not by a long shot.

So why should you settle on Hagee as representative of the religious sector of this country?

Dispensationalists are onto something. They are onto the growing depression that people are feeling, a deep emotional depression in the United States. A lack of any hopeful picture of what the world could be - and that failure is not a failure of dispensationalists. It's a failure of the mainstream political framework in this country that to address the major questions facing the world in the 21st century.

What do you think?

Are Americans yearning for some new philosophy to fill a void left by mainstream politics?

I don't know about "dispensationalism," but the tendency to blame personal failures and unhappiness on The System is widespread, and by no means limited to the religious right. To people like Moyers, who is about as far to the left as you can get without coming at you from the other direction, no doubt the answer is to fill the void with "mainstream politics."

Give up conventional religion, and like the Enlightened, worship the true gods--the ones that dwell in the Shining City on the Potomac. The Shining City from which all worldly bounty will, with the best efforts of people like Moyers, someday flow. If the people deserve it, of course.
