Buddism may have the rudiments of logic in their "Eightfold way" or whatever they call it, but not all buddist sects observe it. Basically, Buddism is a religion for the dumb masses, and when push comes to shove, will do whatever their emotional inclinations tell them to do. Religious leaders such as the Dalai Lama would do his followers a huge favor by emphasizing certain aspects of their doctrine that are common with modern democratic societies:
The Five Precepts:
1. To refrain from taking life. (i.e. non-violence towards sentient life forms)
2. To refrain from taking that which is not given (i.e. not committing theft)
3. To refrain from sensual misconduct (abstinence from immoral sexual behavior)
4. To refrain from lying. (i.e. speaking truth always)
5. To refrain from intoxicants which lead to loss of mindfulness (refrain from using drugs or alcohol)
The Four Noble Truths:
1. There is suffering
2. There is a cause of suffering - craving
3. There is the cessation of suffering
4. There is a way leading to the cessation of suffering - the Noble Eightfold Path
Nothing wrong with that. Trouble is, they may or may not adhere to it. And there is no emphasis on science. In spite of these basic tenets of the religion, none of the leaders including the Dalai Lama are teaching people and encouraging people to seek enlightenment through science, specifically. They just say "meditate" or some bullshit like that. Unfortunately there is a limit to logical development in the absence of scientific data. And better knowledge is available than what their meditation can dream up.
All religions suck. Some more than others. There are worse ways to live than being a Buddist I suppose.
