Does Explain One Thing

Why NASA chose to leave the return ship unnattended in orbit in their reference mission design remake of Zubrin's Mars Direct. I always thought that was idiotic. But if you want something too big to land that's your only choice. The disagreement over minimum crew size thus becomes very critical. 4 as in Mars Direct or 6 as in the NASA Mars Reference missions.
