If I remember right, during STS 117, during one of the astronauts daily documentaries, one of the astronauts said that it was Suni Williams that came up the 'hockey stick' idea as well as covering it up with Kapton tape. He said that she came up with the idea during a previous mission. It very well could have been during STS 116.
