It's hard to reconcile, but that's all there is.

There ain't no more. You're talking with someone who refuses to learn the difference between an economic system and a political system, who doesn't believe Islam or communism should be taught about in schools.]

Who believes that reading a book means the author is telling one how to think. Who cannot empathize, who cannot imagine how the other fellow feels, who believes that learning about one's enemies is traitorous.

Simplistic, chauvanistic, jingoistic, a believer that there is a winner and a loser in every situation. That cutting one's losses is "surrender". That the Vietnam war was a good thing. Imagine that - wasn't lost, was a fight against Russian domination of the world and a necessary fight.

Tom believes in his heart of hearts that Bush didn't lie, that the reasons for entry into the Iraq situation was because of WMDs, nukes, democracy, in the unselfish best interests of the Iraqi people, and not Bush hegemony. Really believes that.

Someone who refuses to learn history.

And that hasn't changed in the time I've been around. Tom is seductive - a nice guy who gives the appearance of being reasonable, able to reason, and subject to reason.

And takes one by surprise every time until one stops trying to reason with him, but just counter the grosser excesses of his posts.
