When Bowman and Poole both enter the pod, Bowman orders HAL "Rotate the pod, please HAL" 3 times....without reaction....And yet, we know HAL could read lips and at the time of that request, neither Bowman nor Poole have yet discussed about disconnecting him.
So why does HAL ignore Bowman's command even before he finds out they want to kill him?
