Your idea to keep Hubble in a stable orbit until someone thinks of a better idea isn't bad right now. Pretty sad, I know. Unfortunately, it will have to take, as I've said, a work horse such as our present day shuttle with it's payload capacity to bring back and even upgrade Hubble.
I hope they'll keep this in mind for future 'visual' scopes. I'm sure I'm not the only one that feels that this shouldn't be the last of such scopes. Infrared and Xrays are great, but the visual concept that Hubble was able to bring shouldn't just be in the history books. It's a no brainer, there's more out there.
