Thanks for the non-partisan look at this.
Whatever happened to personal and corporate responsibility? This one doesn't set very well with me. Other than a check that got truly lost in the mail, I've never once allowed my mortgage payment to get behind. My wife and I have always ensured that we only bought a home that fell within our budget and always planned for emergencies. The one time we had to put ourselves into an adjustable rate mortgage we ensured that if the rates went as high as they possibly could the day after we purchased the house, we would not fall behind. I would dig ditches 18 hours a day to keep from losing my home.
I have no problem helping fellow citizens that have financial devastation resulting from unforeseen things like medical misfortune but on an issue where it's all about simple greed and idiocy, I have little tolerance. If banks and mortgage companies are in danger of huge financial setbacks because of risky loans then they deserve to fail and I'm willing to face the consequences of seeing our country fall into a severe recession. It's the only cure for this hubris we've all grown up with believing we're somehow entitled to this unsustainable style of living that is completely devoid of responsibility and work ethic. The folks that still have that will be the survivors of the mess.
