SS was designed for the lower income common person that when faced with putting aside some portion of their income for an uncertain future, chose instead to buy food, clothes, and housing.
So who's paying their Social Security taxes?
The money is still being put away, it's just the government taking the money, then borrowing it two seconds later.
Social Security was based on the idea that there would always be a lot more young workers than old people. This isn't working out so well any more. It was also expanded far beyond its original retirement support intent, and I suspect even FDR would be somewhat astonished that it occupies over a fifth of a nearly three trillion dollar Federal budget all by itself.
You want to see something depressing, work out what a 65-year-old would have in the bank today if the money dumped into Social Security all his younger life had been put in the stock market.
