I guess this could be valid as a CE post or a Science post but since the interest in sports here is minimal I chose OT. :)
The Mitchell Report has exposed hundreds (?) of players using illegal enhancement. My opinion is that it is much ado about not so much. Seems simple to me, if a drug or supplement is harmful to ones health it should be illegal just like any illegal drug (cocaine, heroin, etc.). If they are not harmful, (I have no idea what might fall into this category but HGH comes to mind) why not allow them? The point being that harmful does not seem to be the primary factor. Enhancement alone seems to be the bugaboo.
To suggest that records should be footnoted when steroids or whatever wee involved is ridiculous. Athletes used amphetamines long before anyone heard of steroids. I have no doubt that those uppers affected records
Professional athletes should be allowed to do whatever they wish to enhance their performance and what athletes did years ago should not factor in. Years ago an athlete's career was often shortened by injuries that would now be corrected by improved surgical techniques. Should those techniques be disallowed.
Whether they use drug enhancement or not athletes live abnormal lives, training themselves compulsively, beyond the limits of normal human endurance.
New drugs, stem cell research and surgical procedures will be available and they will be used.
