CFL's
are not a perfect answer but they're now being mass produced and the prices are coming down quickly. However, detractors are right about the mercury in them and the additional energy costs required to manufacture them. They're a wonderful intermediate step though that's sorely needed.
Ultimately the even newer and more energy stingy LED bulbs will be our best bet but they're a number of years out before their manufacturing costs come down to the affordable range. They sure make wonderful flashlights though.
