Inertia, ignorance, innumeracy and inability to calculate value, shortsightedness, willful perversity

That last one, "willful perversity", is for you, Tom, because I'm sure you'll go out of your way to use incandescents precisely because they'll be banned eventually. When incandescents are outlawed, only outlaws will have incandescents, and it's cool to be an outlaw, right?

Despite your dreams of anarchic individualism, as long as you live in a human society you're a member of a collective, and you can't escape the consequences of decisions made by other members of your collective. When society as a whole wastes energy, it drives up the cost for you personally as well as for Holy Business, which passes it on to you eventually. You can be as personally frugal with energy as you possibly can, and it will do you little good if you're the lonely drop in the bucket.

Or we could talk about another holy, national security, and the profound benefits of a national policy of energy frugality for disentangling us from the mess in the Middle East. Save a little electricity with CFLs, save a bit more energy with higher automotive mileage standards, save a lot with alternative energy sources...it's all profitable, both monetarily and in terms of national security.

So, you gonna cling to dogma and whine about bureaucrats with guns, or will you do the right thing by your country and your wallet?
