And it is almost certain that they were behind the attack.
Mushariff's hold on power will be substantially weakened by this turn of events...He will almost certainly declare that some sort of "emergency powers" are needed that will again suspend Pakistan's fragile democracy. The ironic thing is that his weakness allowed it to happen in the first place. Had he taken a stronger stance against the Al Queda factions in Pakestan, then this might not have happened. He was trying to please all sides, and as a result nobody is going to be happy in the end. I think Musharriff's days are now numbered.
The real question will be, when Mushariff goes, what happens?
My guess, the whole of Pakestan plunges into civil war. And then you will see refugees fleeing into Afganistan and Bangledesh (the border to Kashmire will be closed off by renewed fighting between India and Muslim sympathising rebels.)
The UN will demand that the US set up camps for the refuges in Afganistan. The US will be blamed as the violence inside of Pakestan escalates. But then the US is always blamed, so that is nothing new.
Hopefully, the USA will (or already has) secured the Pakestani nukes.
