Blaming al-Qaeda is just too convenient.

"Row breaks out over Benazir Bhutto's death." By Isambard Wilkinson, Pakistan Correspondent, and Bonnie Malkin

"The burial of Benzair Bhutto was today marred by heavy violence across Pakistan as a bitter row broke out over how she died."

"However, one of Miss Bhutto's aide rejected the government's explanation of her death as a "pack of lies".

Now, al-Qaeda may be to blame, but there are compelling reasons to at least doubt that idea. That some al-Qaeda official might claim it is completely understandable.

However, blaming al-Qaeda is extremely helpful to Musharraf and Bush. If the Pakistan army or intelligence services was behind it how could Bush continue to support that dictator? Couldn't.

One has to ask how it happens that at the very spot Bhutto decides to stick her head out of the Land Rover there is a suicide bomber waiting armed with an AK-47? That very spot? Was her route absolutely lined with those folks, everywhere? First reports said shot, in head and neck. Then the blast.

I believe there is a truth out there, and I believe we don't know it. And never will. Blaming al-Qaeda and moving on is too convenient for the folks who matter. Bush will do anything to protect Musharraf, even tolerate massive nuclear proliferation.

And Musharraf regarded Bhutto as a threat to him, and she was perceived as America's shill in a country in which 67% of the people regard America as the biggest threat to their security. Bigger'n India even.
