McCain has a long history of domestic policies that many Republicans have problems with. Immigration and amnesty is a major sticking point. So was his pushing of a limit on political free speech. He opposed the tax cuts, and has taken other positions inconsistent with my views.
On the other hand, he has held a strong and consistent position on foreign policy and Iraq when he could have gone over to the other side at any time. This is good, but not enough of a balance.
I have no problem at all with his character. His positions seem sincere enough. I just don't agree with him. That some Republicans have gone off the deep end on this is certainly true. I would probably still vote for him over whoever the Democrats cough up.
The Democratic definition of a "reasonable" Republican is one who adopts Democratic positions and policies. See also: Arnold.
As some proof of this definition, try and find a Democrat who considers Lieberman a "reasonable" Democrat for moving toward the Republican side on certain key issues.
