Where would I draw the line?

At efficiency. At common sense. At places where the other model is not only broken but ensnarled in greed and class warfare.

There are things that the federal government can do better than private enterprise and they involve areas where profit should have nothing to do with the end product. Health care is a shining example of that. Education is another. Coordinating and building interstate highways and railroads is a good example. Guardianship of our national parks and monuments. Disaster control (state with federal backup), military preparedness. A basic safety net for the elderly. Those things all are best done at the national level in my opinion.

A country that just did those things would be a far cry from a Leninistic collective. There's still plenty of room for private innovation and capital success. Not only that but many businesses that can't make it today would have huge incentives to grow and profit without the burden of taking care of the private lives of their employees as is expected of them in current business models.

I want both in the picture in mixtures that make sense economically and socially. Societies that try to take care of every aspect of human life rot and fester but societies that want to give unlimited freedom without responsibility to their citizens end up with an upper class that walks across the bodies of its downtrodden. Extremes of either are bad for a country's strength but also for the human spirit that brought us such success.
