Are you intentionally missing the point?
It's pretty obvious. She grew up in a nation where people of her race were slaves. Where institutionalized racism existed a century after the slaves were freed. Where racism still exists today unfortunately. But it's dying off faster than many people would have thought. Definitely something for her, and the rest of us, to be enormously proud of.
