In my daughter's case specifically, she had one history class that attempted to cover this period. She went to an acclaimed Catholic school in New Orleans and this particular class was taught by a nun (not sure what that has to do with anything, but what the heck). In this class, they never finished covering WWII before the term ran out.

Recent history tends to get shortchanged. In my own case I recall that I never heard about Bay of Pigs, in my own HS history classes. I had to find out about that one through my own efforts.
