re: Good question.

That news reporters are going to make a lot of noise about weather has little to do with actual weather. And when one has 365 days to a year and lots of locations around the world, one will get reports of record weather- if there are 10 major rivers around world one can get a 100 year flood on average every 10 years [and nothing stops reporters from claiming it's 500 year flood when it's a 100 year flood].

There is nothing severe about current weather events around the world as compared to earlier times- though one will get increasing numbers of reporter standing in hurricane winds trying strike a pose and speaking in a epic sounding voice.

There is definitely less percentage of people dying in from weather events in modern times as compared to the past. But this has more to do with the higher technological capability.
Because increasing population [and people choosing live in areas where in the past considered foolish to live- on the beach or sand bars] and because of high prices due to simple inflation and foolish people building these huge sand castle type palaces. One will have more dollar amounts in terms cost from a severe weather event. I.e 100,000 people living in mud huts aren't going have much dollar amount losses even if all huts are destroyed and half of them die.

So, in last few decades there not has been any noticeable change in severe weather and if want to predict these disasters coming in the next 100 years, you will to get in line with the other nutters claiming such doom.
