re: I will admit- very tiresome

To quote from post above:-“Remember what happened with the human genome. Then, as with so many other things, the rest of the world will use what was created here.”

That is so tiresome. SCIENCE IS NOT ABOUT WHAT COUNTRY YOU ARE IN. It is international, that's one reason it works so well.
1. The human genome is possible because of the discovery of the gene (Mendel, Czech).
2. The human genome is possible because of the discovery of the chromosome- by Von Nageli (Swiss) and a bunch of others (mostly German)
3. The human genome project was possible because of the decoding of the double helix- done in Cambridge BRITAIN not Cambridge Mass jointly between Crick (UK) and Watson (US).
4. The technology for sequencing genes was a dual noble prize between Walter Gilbert (Harvard) and Fred Sanger (Cambridge UK) – who is one of the very few scientists to receive two Nobel prizes.
5. A lot of the basic concepts about the control of gene expresion originate with Jacob and Monod (French)

Do I need to go on? I easily could. No one denies teh huge impac tof US Science, but p******g on everyone else out of a misplaced sense of patriotism is the antithesis of the scientific ethos.
.
Many years ago I was flying from New York to London seated beside two rather portly gents from- by their accents- Boston (or there abouts). They were on a mission to sell some gizmo in Europe, and one of the portly gentlemen turned to the other and declared in aloud voice that they "were bringing the industrial revolution to Europe". Talk about dumb. Now with that attitude and stellar lack of historical perspective, I can predict that they sold very, very, little. Chauvanism rarely sells well.
