I'm not pissing on any countries, I'm pissing on a philosophy. The idea that all that is good and wonderful comes from government programs.
The human genome was sequenced by a private company for a tenth of the cost of the vast government project, and for their pains they were told by the government that they had no right to the product of their effort. The biotech industry lost about $50 billion on that announcement, and Celera stood behind the others on stage to avoid embarrassing the government.
I would lay good odds that real progress over the next fifteen years in low-cost and effective space transportation, fusion, electric cars, and solar power will come mostly from the private sector.
We'll see how much of it comes from outside the U.S.
It isn't because of what those countries are, it's because of what they believe.
