You're in the service sector.
If folks use your designs to produce something commercial, then your work shifts to industry. If it is just used by government, it remains service sector because your work will not generate revenue.
Services can only be sold once.
A material item with objective value can be bought and sold many times. It can be traded and stored.
That's why car production, television production, etc. is so important to a nations wealth. Japan got rich by become a manufacturer of material goods - they were not selling services.
China is slowly getting rich producing items for other nations, but because they are often not the inventor or designer, it's very slow going compared to America's wealth generation. Once they figure what Japan figured out LONG ago - copy and improve on USA designs and ideas and undercut the competition - they will be in the catbird seat because of their factory development and industrial capacity.
Microsoft produces software which is the byproduct of software designers, and software is a material item, but it is not a secure commodity and anyone with the ability to pirate software can steal it, reproduce it and sell it for less.
You can't duplicate a car or a television like you can a few gigabyes of digital data.
If other people do not want the same things you want why should that stop you from achieving your goals. If you are able to create new machines, if your achievement is rationally valuable, you will find people who appreciate it... No man can expect to be an innovator and find a ready-made audience sharing in advance the values he has not yet produced.
- Ayn Rand
