Look, I'm a bit tired of people acting like overseas manufacturing is a product of evil greed on the part of corporations.
Assume some major company that makes its product in China or elsewhere "Sees the Light" and moves his manufacturing back into the U.S.
He's not going to find anyone to work for Chinese wages. In fact, he'll be likely to get saddled with union labor demanding the benefits and wages they believe they have a right to.
So, the company pays the wages. The price of the product goes up. Maybe, depending on the product, by a lot.
Are you going to spend more on it because it's made in the U.S.A.? Maybe you would. Maybe I would. Maybe quite a few Americans would. But a lot more Americans would buy the cheaper version. Many people would have to.
The dirty little secret is that Social Awareness is largely a rich man's game. Solar panels on the roof, buying organic, earth-friendly fabrics, paying more for things made in the U.S., getting a hybrid, you name it. People with extra money can do these things. People without extra money flock to Wal-Mart, and buy what they sell there.
And what about overseas customers? Who in France is going to give a crap about whether something is made in the U.S. or China? They'll go for the cheapest alternative, or maybe something made in France. Sure as heck they won't pay extra for our Socially Aware American company's product.
So there you are. Maybe our kind-hearted corporation finds a little niche market in the "made in the U.S." category. But the corporations making the same product in China are going to be eating his lunch.
