Enceladus was really the last hope.
When CASSINI flew through the 'watery' plume spewed
out of Enceladus earlier this month it had a chance
to detect more than organics and water molecules,
it had a chance to detect "free oxygen".
It didn't detect any free oxygen.
It detected organics, but organics are NOT life.
If there were life inside Enceladus, it would have been
microscopic [bacteria].
There isn't any there.
Bacteria take in carbon dioxide and give off free oxygen
as a byproduct.
There's plenty of carbon dioxide spewing out of Enceladus,
none of it being consumed by nonexistent bacteria.
The origin of the methane emissions detected are easier and better to explain by
nonbiological means
There's no life inside Enceladus.
There's no life inside Europa, no bacteria swimming in its highly acidic
ocean(s).
There's no life on or under Titan.
There's no life on or under Mars today.
Mars is too cold, dry and sterile.
Even the martian water ice is...too dry!
Temperatures on Mars are so cold that water ice is best regarded as a dry substance.
Water ice everywhere on Mars but none for bacteria to use.
Extremophiles? Yes, extremophiles can in theory live on Mars or in Enceladus
BUT, extremophiles need ENERGY!...They need FOOD!...They need FLUID [gas and liquid]!
Mars and Enceladus fail to meet ALL those requirements.
This Solar System is blessed with indigenous life on only ONE world. Earth.
What about fossils?...If the infamous Mars meteorite, ALH8001, tells us anything,
it is that the case for hypothetical Martian microbial fossils CANNOT be proven with any reliable
degree of certainty.
And, may I add that with so many "hot Jupiters", many light-years out, being discovered weekly the case for life beyond our Solar System doesn't get stronger, it gets WEAKER!
My opinion is [its my opinion alone!] is that there is NO physical, DNA, carbon-based life
anywhere within at LEAST 6,000 light years of our world.
A world unique, more beautiful than anything else in the Solar System blessed abundantly with precious life.
I love this Planet of mine! I confess I'm an Earth chauvinist and I'm proud out of it!!!
It's my opinion, my conclusion, but now I have to say that there is no life within our Solar System and farther out too.

- Other possibilities.
