It takes only a millisecond to think of countervailing examples like the Kristols and Buckley. The endangered intellectual conservative tends to have a formal, punctilious, and occasionally elegant way of expressing nonsense. They're disciplined writers, naturally.

I will note, though, that your example of a thoughtful Conservative essayist is a former Liberal. There's a fair bit of that--Dennis Miller comes to mind, once funny as a mildly Liberal curmudgeon. Now he's just a curmudgeon on Fox News, and a bitter one at that.
