Pols tend to go to Bob Jones to curry support of a certain segment of the conservative family. And when they go there, they tend to say things that that segment likes to hear.
As for Lott, I seem to recall him pilloried for things he said.
As for Hillary, she's running a negative campaign because she's in danger of her campaign failing. Everyone knew this would happen if she found herself in this situation.
