I think the difference is that while the Democrats or Republicans might invite a Shirley Maclaine to introduce a candidate or keynote speaker, they wouldn't ask Shirley to address a convention audience about national space policy.
And, yes, for Hoagland, the "Face on Mars" was just the beginning of his nonsense factory.
