Y'know, I'm a materialist, and I don't believe in an afterlife, or in karma for that matter. I don't really care what happens to me after I'm gone, and if I have indeed left any work behind which will benefit those that follow me, I do it because I care for them now, not because I care what they'll think of me then.
But to deliberately leave behind a legacy of obvious fraud and nonsense, to do it willingly and with full knowledge, and to do it solely because of the benefit it will bring to one now, in the present, strikes me as a pathology of the very highest order. Not only does it reveal a complete indifference for what humanity may think of you, but a complete contempt for humanity itself. I think some people just don't care if others suffer.
