It's not as bad as you think.
The Soyuz is a more reliable and safer craft
than the NASA shuttles.
Do the math!...14 killed on the shuttles; only 4 on the Soyuzes.
There have been over 100+ shuttle flights; but the Soyuz
space craft missions exceed that number considerably.
The chutes catching on fire [near the ground] probably occured because of the redundant solid braking rockets attached to the parachute lines...The small rockets usually make the Soyuz landings
gentler, though not always...
