Gedanken experiment

Maybe we should have a referendum. Perhaps a UN-sponsored and monitored election, in Iraq and Afghanistan. If the people say "please stay", we stay. If they say "get the hell out", we leave.

The big question is, in the US, will the pro-war faction accept a "get-out" vote, and will the peace faction accept a "stay" decision?

Yeah, I know all the practical difficulties in implementing such a plan, but it is something to think about. And is honoring the results of the election the right thing to do, whatever it happens to be?
