Vietnam and elections
When the partioning of Vietnam took place after the French losses, there was a provision for binding "free elections" which would determine who would run a united country.
The US had South Vietnam pull out of the elections, knowing they would lose. The excuse given was the North would force their citizens to vote for the North, thereby making the idea of "free elections" a sham.
And we all know what happened. They, it being their country, wanted it more and got it. (At least it wasn't also a religious war even though they acted like it sometimes.)
Very much like most nations, including the Revolutionary US.
