That's why I use a rock hammer to turn rocks over.
Sometime, get your hands on a battery powered black light and head out in the desert on a moonless night and turn over some rocks. If you wanna see some interesting critters, that is. Scorpions glow!
(If you see any quartz looking minerals that glow, gimme a shout.)
But back to Bakken. No doubt there is recoverable oil there. What's needed is the investment to drill it. And to get that money, investors have to be convinced that there will be a return on investment. The USGS has done an important study that outlines where to explore. The press, and the blogosphere, has taken this assesment and blown it out of proportion. This almost always happens with new resource opportunities. It brings in investors; and promoters tend to exaggerate.
Geologists like to discover resources. We like to tell people about them. But we also insist on being accurate in our reporting.

- 1. You cannot produce more of a resource than has been discovered.
- Oil is all around us - we're nearly drowning in it!
- Yes, we geologists know the truth about oil and we ain't gonna tell you.
