Barack needed to distance himself from a church that may have been very useful for him as a local politico, but which doesn't make any sense for a presidential candidate (especially after Wright went ballistic). But he had to do it in such a way that it didn't come across as dissing his pastor of 20 years. I don't think he planned this all ahead of time, but he definitely turned two negatives to a positive by finessing the whole situation. Be honest now, would anyone ever accuse Dubya of such subtlety?
This has nothing to do with my opinion of Obama, one way or the other. I'm speaking strictly from a point of view of political strategy and perception management. Mind you, I have no idea if any of this is true or not, I'm just saying it's consistent with the facts.
If you can just get past your hatred for the man and his party and read between the lines you might be able to pick up on some of these subtle cues. Remember Cardinal Richelieu's dictum: "You cannot afford to hate your enemies, it only clouds your judgement about them."
By the way, where's your smiley face? You've been neglecting it lately.
