"...Obama...not calling for a freeze on mortgage foreclosures and not supporting a suspension of the gas tax."
I fully support those positions, precisely BECAUSE it is classic free market policy, not just corporate welfare pretending to be laissez-faire economics. The last thing we want to do now is encourage fuel consumption and reward investors and borrowers who made bad speculative real estate decisions . Clinton is desperately trying to get nominated, she will say anything to get votes, but why is Bush supporting the gas tax suspension? Reflexive autonomic anti-tax galvanic spasm, or just another run-out-the-clock-until-November maneuver?
Just to show you I'm not doctrinaire, I DO support Bush on his refusal to free up the National Petroleum Reserve. Some aircraft carriers are still bunker-fueled, and I have a feeling they're going to come in very handy over the next few years.
And what is Sen McClain's position on these issues?
