The Republicans have been trying to open domestic resources for well over a decade, throught the Clinton and Bush administrations, and have been smacked flat by the Democrats. No ANWR, no continental shelf, no oil shale, no drilling on many other government properties.
And if there is a Republican anti-nuclear movement, I don't know about it.
This is not a "both parties" situation.
The spectacle of the Democrats strutting back and forth and pointing fingers at the oil companies for the high prices was disgusting. I suppose it impressed the idiots among their constituencies.
The solutions are painfully obvious, but if they are enacted and the prices drop, it's going to also become painfully obvious who the culprits were.
You are correct that the current crop of presidential candidates have not stepped up on this. McCain doesn't even list "energy" on his list of issues, and his "solutions" proposed for gas prices skirt the real solutions.
