It's not a matter of apology, and has nothing to do with Bush in any way. It's a matter of deflating the seemingly indestructible meme that somehow the Saudis were "behind" 9/11 in some way.

This is usually expressed in the simple-minded mantra "why did we invade Iraq when most of the hijackers were from Saudi Arabia?" Of course, none of the hijackers were from Afghanistan or Pakistan either, but folding that data point into the meme pegs out the abstraction capacity of most of the people pushing the meme in the first place.

The hijackers were selected from "benign" nations like Saudi Arabia, Egypt, UAE and Lebanon because such nations raised little objection at the borders. Saudi Arabia in particular had an expedited visa process in place at that time.

I expect this will change nothing in your mind, but I thought I'd put it out there for the exercise.
