2000 was the Great Policy Wonk Election, all about programs and the technical minutea of government. Those two guys could've been running for governor. You won't see its like for many election cycles to come.
9/11 Changed Everything, and Bush successfully exploited it in 2004 by running a visceral and distinctly non-wonkish campaign; and Kerry never figured out how do anything but trail along after him. Bush used raw fear to frame himself as the Glorious Leader who could save us all from certain death (if we only give up a few unimportant rights like privacy.)
And all of a sudden you want another policy wonk election?
I'm surprised you can't pick up the zeitgeist, but I guess it's on that wavelength you can't receive. Conditions--the history of the last eight years--has produced a situation in which the next President will be the candidate who most closely resembles "the Man on a White Horse". You're reversing cause-and-effect. Obama matches the template slightly better than Hillary, and both far better than McBush.
Don't blame me, blame George W. Bush.
And how did we get to this point?
