Nothing more, nothing less.
Weather has crazy spells, and quiet times. In the modern news-as-instant-gratification world, every odd little thing in every corner of the globe is getting reported in the headlines. if you look widely enough, you'll find that half the places have ABOVE AVERAGE events.
WOW!
some are even well above average!
I won't trouble the class with the statistics of Poisson distributions, but suffice it to say that sometimes a lot of people get kicked to death by horses in one year in one country, or suffer from extreme weather events, or whatever...
Does it mean anything? Yes, and no. You have to collect data, measure trends, and think about statistical significance. Right now, the signal is probably still buried in the noise. When it becomes clear, everyone will say "I told you so", whichever way it turns out. People are like that, they like to be right...
