I think every campaign has a rythym, with peaks and valleys. Given there are 4 months until the election, I suspect Obama doesn't want to peak too soon, or tire the electorate out early.

And before he had the nomination tied up he had to appeal to Democrats with a "this is what we stand for" platform. Now that he's campaigning to be president of all Americans he is naturally shifting to a platform which would reflect what is possibly more reasonable and possible.

In my opinion as a complete idiot on these things he has only enemies to gain by being way out there before the convention.
