I doubt that it required anything more than the free sex to grab the hippies. That plus the hippy axiom repeated in the book that anything made from god's earth (cannabis/alcohol) is divine and meant to be enjoyed.
Throw in the ability to make cops disappear at will and what more could a hippy wish for.
Their Beavis and Butthead mentalities would never grok the sad wrongness of the book.
