Because McCain challenged his foreign policy credentials.

McCain had also challenged him to go to the Middle East based on McCain's superiority in military background.

So Obama, rightly understanding that he's considerably younger than McCain and thus lacks some of his life experience, took him up on the challenge. Lesson to McCain: be careful what you wish for, because you might get it.

If Obama had gone to Berlin and nobody was interested enough to come see him, that would have made the wire services and the TV networks too.

This is only my opinion, but I believe that the enthusiasm with which Obama has been greeted in Europe has at least as much to do with the perception of Obama as the antiBush as it does with his own personal qualities.

As for the speech: Kennedy graduated from Harvard University, and Obama from Harvard Law School. It's not that big of a stretch to consider that public speaking, rhetoric, and expository writing as taught at these sister institutions would impart some similarities to their graduates' speaking styles. If Obama starts dropping Rs that are followed by consonants and adding them to words ending in A, that will be a different thing.

And isn't it wonderful to listen to a Presidential candidate who knows how to use the language again?
