Four more words: On the other hand...
One of the coalition-building strategies pursued by the Republicans is to nationalize what were once local issues. In doing so, they dangle before the RRR the prospect of imposing their will on the entire country, and that's heady stuff for people who are simultaneously being told by Republicans how they've been marginalized by a Liberal conspiracy (demagogic tactics like scapegoating never go out of style, do they?). They promise Constitutional amendments to bind their religious beliefs into law, such as banning gay marriage and abortion nationwide, and promise to pack the Supreme Court with judges who'll rubberstamp the deprivation of rights of a minority.
I view the local activities by the RRR as part of a continuum rather than an isolated anomaly. They've gotten a taste of success in local politics and want to scale up to the national level, and Republican politicians are more than happy to exploit that desire for their own gain.
