Current Events

What really depressed me about the Democratic Convention.

I was appalled at the press coverage and analysis. Although I have often (and a I believe, correctly) ridiculed the Right for their constant whining about liberal media bias, this is one situation where I have little alternative but to wholeheartedly agree with them. The fawning admiration of the analysts and reporters for all things Democratic was nothing short of embarassing. Don't get me wrong, I agreed with them on every point, but I was appalled at the undisguised and one-sided partisanship displayed by the NBC pundits, it was a disgrace.

The Democratic speakers and functionaries can be forgiven for their slanted views, they don't claim to be unbiased and it's their job to slam Republicans; but hearing the commentaries of people I normally respect, like Chris Mathews, left me livid. Having Keith Olberman there as his color man was unforgiveable. He is a lefty Limbaugh as far as I'm concerned, and although his snarky mugging may be appropriate for his highly partisan TV videoblog, it was completely out of line in what should have been an objective analysis role. At the very least, it gives Conservatives legitimate ammunition they can use for their own purposes. And you know they will.

Token righty Pat Buchanan was available for rebuttal, and to his credit, he exhibited admirable professional restraint and restricted his remarks to comments on strategy and tactics, not ideology. But even his participation, which I found perceptive and well-reasoned even when I didn't particularly agree with it, was drowned out by a crowd of Democratic spectators that made it almost impossible to hear what he was saying. Every time he attempted to speak the crowd behind the open-air news desk deliberately and maliciously drowned him out with jeers and catcalls. On the other hand, they kept silent when the left-leaning journalists spoke, except, of course, to cheer them at the end and to laugh at all their jokes.

The entire performance was a travesty and a disgrace, and even my Mme Reclus, who is considerably further left on the political spectrum than I am, just shook her head in disbelief and muttered, "Well, I guess the days of Huntley and Brinkely are over."

Good night, Chet.
Good night, David.
And good night for NBC News.
