The glaring truth is that conservatives feel marginalized because they are marginalized. You're not imagining that the country's tended in a Liberal direction for going on 80 years. Thank god--it's called progress. And Roosevelt's New Deal wasn't that new an idea, it was just an acceleration and reaffirmation of the fundamentally Liberal roots of America.
When you become the torch-bearer for the Western Liberal Tradition, the only way to lose is to turn your back on the Enlightenment and embrace Conservatism.
Where the country goes as a whole defines the mainstream, in realtime. When you rail against the "mainstream media" complaining that it's Liberal, you're acknowledging that the mainstream of America is Liberal, and that Conservatives have sidelined themselves.
The increasing bitterness and bellicosity of the Right tracks its increasing marginalization and irrelevance. Eight years of Bush rule including six years of a Republican Congress demonstrates that Conservatism is dysfunctional and often destructive. Eight months of a McCain campaign whose only positive promise is tax cuts for the wealthy, consisting otherwise only of vicious attacks on the opposition to try to make a Republican look like the lesser evil, demonstrates how totally bankrupt is Conservatism. It has nothing to offer except fear, divisiveness, and bitterness.
