"Kids are known to screw up sometimes regardless of the information they're given."
Yes, that's true. However:
Kids are almost guaranteed to screw up when important information is withheld from them, which abstinence-only sex education does as a matter of practice. Information deprivation is the centerpiece of the abstinence-only method: teach them to say no and teach them only to say no. Don't teach them about what to do when they eventually might want to say yes.
It's something of a miracle when a kid who has been deprived of information makes an informed choice anyway. ("Informed" and "scared to death" are not the same thing.) It means that the kid has made the effort, sometimes by stealth, to discover the information she, or he, needs.
